BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY & AQUACULTURE

       P.R. Government College (Autonomous), Kakinada, was established in the year 1884 by Pithapuram Maharaja,

Sri. R.V.KM. SURYARAO BAHADUR MAHARAJ. 

  •  The Department of Zoology was established in 1926 with the introduction of the B.A. group, in which zoology was offered as an optional subject. In 1930, a B.Sc. group was introduced with zoology as the main subject. When Andhra University was established in 1926, the department became affiliated with Andhra University, and the department has been reaffiliated with Adikavi Nannaya University since 2013. 

  •                   After the college attained autonomous status in 2001, the Department of Zoology introduced a restructured course in biotechnology with a zoology combination starting from the academic year 2001–2002. Many students from this program are currently pursuing academic research in various universities across the country.

  •  The department has consistently responded to local and academic requirements by introducing need-based courses. The department has launched a vocational degree course in commercial aquaculture under the guidelines of the UGC 12th Plan . This course addresses the needs of the local aquaculture industry, and most students from the outgoing batches have secured employment in reputed aquaculture farms and related industries. Subsequently another restructured course, CZAC, has also been started with Aquaculture Technology. The M.Sc. Zoology program was launched during the academic year 2014–2015. achieving an outstanding 100% results every year. As part of NEP 2020, the department has shifted to a single major system from the academic year 2023-24, offering two major programs: ZOOLOGY and AQUACULTURE.

  • The Zoology Department continuously organizes webinars, seminars, or workshops to disseminate scientific knowledge to stakeholders. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown period, it has organized two international webinars in 2020. engaging participants from across the globe. Organized a 5-day TOT on dairy technology in 2022 and also organized a national-level conference on green initiatives for sustainable aquaculture on 4th August 2024 and also completed certificate courses on biodiversity, water quality assessment, and economic and applied zoology successfully during the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-25. 

  • The department is equipped with well-established laboratories, ICT classrooms, a museum, etc., featuring various teaching aids such as models, preserved specimens, charts, permanent slides, microscopes, and other relevant equipment. Faculty members actively motivate students to take up project work and encourage participation in curricular and co-curricular activities.

  • The overall academic environment in the department is student-friendly and growth-oriented. Teachers offer continuous support and guidance, helping students develop holistically through academic programs, research exposure, and skill-building activities. Currently Sri. B. Chakravarthi is acting as in - charge of the Department and having two research guide ships namely Dr. P. Kiran Kumar and Dr. B.Elia
