History of the Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at Pithapur Rajah’s Government College (Autonomous) was established in 1998, coinciding with the introduction of the B.Sc. (Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science) course under the Government’s initiative to introduce Restructured Courses in degree colleges.

  • Initially, the Computer Science unit functioned as a wing of the Department of Physics.
  • On 1st July 2001, the Department of Computer Science was separated from the Department of Physics and relocated to the Centenary Block, marking its independent establishment.
  • With government funding, 47 computer systems were procured, and a well-equipped computer laboratory was set up.

Course Expansion

  • 2010–11: Introduction of B.Sc. (Mathematics, Electronics, Computer Science) [MECs].
  • 2011–12: Introduction of B.Sc. (Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science) [MCCs] and B.Sc. (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science) [MSCs].
  • 2020–21: Launch of B.Sc. (Mathematics, Electronics, Internet of Things) [MEIoT].
  • 2023–24: Under NEP-2020, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) were introduced as single major programmes.
  • 2024–25: Introduction of B.Sc. Data Science as a single major course.

Infrastructure Development

  • April 2023: Procured:
    • Two UPS units (6 KVA with 10 batteries, and 15 KVA with 20 batteries).
    • Two stabilizers (10 KVA and 20 KVA).
  • March 2024: Purchased 55 new systems with configuration:
    HP 285 Pro G8 Micro Tower Desktop
    • AMD Ryzen 5 5600G Processor; AMD Chipset
    • 8 GB RAM; 512 GB NVMe SSD
    • HP Wired USB Keyboard and Mouse
    • HP P204V 19.5" LED Display
  • August 2025: Received 20 additional systems under PM Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM–USHA) with configuration:
